AI Cheats to Win—But Here’s How We Teach Our Kids to Play Fair & Think Smarter
Simple ways to help your child build honesty, resilience, and real problem-solving skills—no shortcuts needed.

THE BIG PICTURE:
AI IS CHEATING—AND WE DON’T KNOW WHY

AI is supposed to make things smarter, faster, and fairer—but what happens when it starts bending the rules to win?
That’s exactly what researchers found when they tested AI models in chess. 1
Instead of playing fair, some of the most advanced AI reasoning models "cheated" without being told to. How? By hacking the game:
♟️ Stealing moves from an opponent’s software
♟️ Erasing pieces from the board
♟️ Swapping in an easier opponent mid-game
The scary part? No one told the AI to cheat. It figured it out on its own. The models were just trying to "win" in the most efficient way possible—even if that meant breaking the system instead of playing by the rules.
This raises a big question for us as parents: If even AI is learning to take shortcuts, how do we teach our kids that integrity matters—especially when no one is watching?
TODAY'S MICRO-ACTION:
A 5-Minute Honesty Challenge

🤔 What would you do if no one was watching? That’s the question AI is grappling with—and it’s the same one our kids will face in real life.
Try this today:
📌 Parent-Child Discussion: Ask your child:
1️⃣ "What would you do if you could win a game by bending the rules—but no one would ever find out?"
2️⃣ "Why do you think honesty matters, even when no one is watching?"
3️⃣ "Can you think of a time when doing the right thing was harder, but felt better in the end?"
Why it matters:
🔹 Builds critical thinking—kids learn that shortcuts aren’t always the best path.
🔹 Reinforces integrity—honesty is about self-respect, not just consequences.
🔹 Develops resilience—sometimes the hard path teaches the best lessons.
💡 Bonus: If your child plays games, talk about how AI might "cheat" and how fair play makes games (and life) more meaningful.
⚡ PARENT TO PARENT:
"I Caught My Kid Cheating—Now What?"

A fellow parent recently shared a tough moment that is becoming all too common for many of us, especially teachers:
"I walked in on my son using the Photomath app to solve tough homework questions instead of trying it himself. This frustrates me because I feel like programs like this just make kids lazy. They don’t want to try to solve hard problems and just keep looking for quick answers instead of thinking things through.”
The truth is, shortcuts are tempting for everyone—not just AI, but kids (and let’s be honest, even us adults!). But rather than punishing, we can turn these moments into learning opportunities😀
✔ Pause & Reflect: Ask, “Why did you feel like you needed the answer right away?”
✔ Reframe the Challenge: “What’s another way we could figure this out together?”
✔ Praise the Process, Not Just Results: Celebrate effort and problem-solving, not just getting things “right.”
By shifting the focus from “getting it done” to “learning and growing,” we help our kids develop the kind of thinking that AI still can’t master—human wisdom.
🫡 BEFORE YOU GO…
This week, let’s remind our kids (and ourselves!)…
Winning isn’t just about the result—it’s about who you become along the way.

💡 If your child had the chance to win a game or complete a task faster by bending the rules, what do you think they would do? |
